Run by the United Nations Environment Programme, World Environment Day is celebrated every year on 5 June to raise awareness of environmental issues and to encourage us all to reconnect with nature. Celebrated in over 100 countries, it features a different theme each year (this year’s is Beat Plastic Pollution) and aims to encourage government bodies, community groups, charities and individuals to take action – however small – to help protect the world around us.
Given that sustainability is at the heart of what we do, World Environment Day is something we’ll be celebrating in a big way here at Sisal & Seagrass HQ. Global warming and pollution are huge issues, but your only concern when you buy a rug or a carpet from us should be which of our beautiful designs would best suit your home. That’s because the materials that we use – coir, sisal, seagrass, viscose and wool – are all derived from nature and are fully biodegradable, requiring no processing or breaking down after their lifespan is over. What’s more, because the plants our flooring fibres are derived from have evolved over time to be anti-static, antibacterial, fungicidal, insecticidal, and naturally resistant to dirt and dust, there’s no need to add chemicals during the manufacturing process in order to perform those functions. All of which means that our natural carpets and rugs, unlike their synthetic counterparts, won’t pollute the environment as they break down by emitting toxins or harmful compounds.
Not only is our flooring eco-friendly, organic and gorgeous-looking to boot, by buying a natural floorcovering you’ll also be helping to support communities that rely on farming and harvesting natural materials, often using environmentally friendly, time-honoured methods. And don’t forget the health benefits: if you suffer from any chemical allergies or sensitivities you’ll notice a drastic difference if you opt for one of our pure wool carpets, for example, rather than a chemically treated alternative.
