Herringbone carpet is a wildly popular choice when it comes to flooring. The visual effect the chevron pattern can give to a room is massively appealing. We want to take a deep dive into our sisal herringbone carpet which we call our Agra Range.

What Are Herringbone Carpets?

Sisal Herringbone Carpet - Agra Granite

Herringbone is a weave design inspired by the chevron pattern. This pattern has been used in flooring since the 16th century and has been a staple of flooring and other interior design ever since.

“The herringbone pattern made its way into flooring design in the 16th Century. One of the first examples of wooden herringbone parquet can be found at the Chateau de Fontainebleau, installed in 1539.”
–  The History Of Herringbone, Sourced from Chauncey’s Timber Flooring.

Carpets particularly benefit hugely from this design giving texture and style to floors as well as helping to draw the eye to certain areas of the room.

How best to use the herringbone weave design.

Sisal Herringbone carpet like our Agra range are a great way to give the visual effect of elongating a room. Like a large mirror in a small space can make it feel larger so too can the chevron pattern.

But this doesn’t mean you should limit yourself to only using this pattern in small rooms. When implemented into large room design it makes the space feel grand and expansive. The pattern also gives the impression of attention to detail in all areas of room design.

Another use for this design is to use the chevrons to lead the eye to certain areas of a rooms layout. An example of this would be using the carpets patter to run toward a large window to accentuate the light in the room.

Even using this method of design to simply aim towards a particular wall where you may have art hanging. The human eye tends to follow patterns, so use this design to your advantage when you can.

Sisal Herringbone Carpets In Focus.

The chevron design can be fantastic when implemented into any flooring material. But when it comes to natural carpets we feel it takes on a whole new level of special.

The reason for this is the extra texture that these types of carpet already provide. Sisal carpet in particular is rustic and stylish, typically with strong country themed impressions. In our opinion, when you add the herringbone pattern to this it suddenly seems modern.

Used in many modern home projects and city apartment designs the low profile exudes elegance. The fact that it is still sisal means that you get a great mix of nature while keeping a clean stylised look.

Probably the most appealing factor though is the texture to match the design. Because of its natural composition, sisal herringbone carpet its slightly more raised in the chevrons than most carpets of this style. Giving more visual pop as well as a phenomenal underfoot feel when you are walking around your home.

Our Agra Range.

When it comes to sisal we like to take advantage of the amazing vegetable dyes on offer that colour and keep our carpets non-toxic.

Our Agra range comes in pale neutral tones as well as dark, moody designs for a dramatic design.

See here how our Sisal Agra Platinum is used for this bedroom carpet to give both light and length to the room.

These images are the perfect example of leading the eye in a room. You can see how the chevrons draw you in to notice the gorgeous bed and the softness it brings. They also help pull your attention towards to large window. Because of the pale colouring the brightness where the sun meets the floor gives a strong point of focus.  This all works to make the room feel large, minimalistic and has a soft and natural vibe.

Other Herringbone Carpet Designs.

Another consideration when choosing is that aside from sisal, there are many natural carpets that come in this pattern.

Seagrass Herringbone carpet is a particularly great choice. This is especially true if you are looking to carpet your hallway and need some resistance against mud.

One of the amazing features of seagrass carpet is how it deals so well with mud. You simply let it dry and then brush it off with a broom to clean it, so stains left behind. Learn more about the wonders of and best areas for seagrass flooring.

Along with seagrass, we also offer both Jute carpet and Coir carpet in herringbone too. The Jute herringbone is a softer flatter design, fantastic for use in a bedroom or study. While the heavier and much more bold Coir herringbone is imposing enough to design an entire room around.
