When looking for a new carpet there are many important decisions to consider. The look, feel, price, durability and so on. But chief among these is what rooms you want to carpet and those you don’t. If you have already narrowed your choice down to seagrass carpet we’re here to help you decide the best area for seagrass flooring.

Why Seagrass Flooring?

Seagrass Flooring

An Environmentally conscious carpet choice.

Most homes now have a mixture of hard wood flooring, carpets, rugs and stair runners. With the ever growing social awareness of environmental issues, eco friendly carpets are fast becoming a popular choice.

Seagrass carpets are made from plant fibres which makes them both renewable and biodegradable. Once at the end of their life they can easily be disposed of without leaving any negative trace. This is in stark contrast to most made made carpets that reduce to harmful micro plastics over time.

Heavy Domestic Durability.

A major consideration when putting new carpet in your home is whether it will endure. All our carpets (except Jute Carpet) including seagrass have a heavy domestic rating. This means that they are perfectly useable for stairs, landings, hallways, living rooms and as bedroom carpets.

In fact seagrass has an even more impressive quality that other natural flooring. Unlike sisal carpet which can be harder to clean, seagrass copes extremely well with things like mud.

If in the event you track heavy mud over your seagrass carpet all you have to do is wait for it to dry. Once dried use a hard bristle brush to get the mud straight off without any stains left behind.

A Faint Smell Of Nature.

One of the lesser known traits about seagrass floors is the faint but amazing smell. Due to their natural composition you will notice a slight aroma of natural seagrass in your home. Our customers usually don’t realise this is a bi product of these carpets before they buy. People often remark at the pleasant surprise of the added fresh and natural smell that greets them when they come home.

Along with the bonus of how the carpet smells it also is great for improving air quality. Natural carpets are fantastic with things like dust, they do not add to the level of dust within your home and capture any dust that falls. Once the dust reaches your carpet you simply hoover it up and its gone.

Most man made carpets not only produce dust but do not hold it in very well either. This means that as you walk around and your feet hit the surface, the dust that has settled bounces straight back into the air.

A Carpet Free Of Volatile Organic Compounds.

This could fall under the last paragraph when we spoke about air quality, but feel it needs a section of its own. Volatile Organic Compounds are hazardous chemicals that are found it most carpets manufactured today.

This chemicals have association to poor health outcomes and are particularly bad for those with chemical sensitivities. We wrote a whole blog on the benefits of non-toxic carpets here.

But to sum this up, these chemicals are something you would ideally like to avoid. Many people are not even aware that certain conditions or allergies may have been caused by carpets that have been in their homes for years.

Natural carpets like coir, sisal, jute and seagrass do not have this issue. Manufactured without the introduction of any toxic chemicals they are completely natural. Even the dyes used to colour our more vibrant sisal runners and stripey sisal carpet are produced with vegetable dyes.

Moth and Larvae Proof.

Not many people know this but seagrass carpets, much like our other natural flooring, are naturally moth and larvae proof.

They will however, eat through and lay eggs in most man made carpets and wool carpets too.

We mentioned prior to this the benefit of non-toxic carpets. Pure wool carpets also fall into this category. The only issue with wool carpets is if they are not treated with insecticides they are vulnerable to moths. Creating a trade off decision between a non-toxic wool carpet or a carpet treated with chemicals.

A bonus of plant fibre flooring is that it also happens to be naturally fire proof also. This is without the need to add fire retardant. With seagrass carpet you are protected on all fronts from unwanted guests or accidents, while still remaining chemical free.

So What Are The Best Areas For Seagrass Flooring?

Seagrass-bedroom-carpet

Truth be told, seagrass carpet is perfect for basically any area of the home. The only exception to this is the bathroom. You should never use seagrass, or any other natural carpet in areas of high moisture or damp.

We could wax lyrical about how great seagrass carpet would be in your bedroom or as a living room carpet. However, this by now should be obvious. But we would like to highlight one area that seagrass flooring really excels above all others.

Seagrass Carpet For Hallways.

So why do we recommend seagrass carpets particularly for hallways? Well, its because of a unique feature we mentioned earlier; its resistance to mud.

Quite often natural carpets are chosen for country style bohemian homes (although they look great in modern designs too). An issue for many customers though is the mud tracked in from boots when living in the country.

Unlike any other natural flooring aside from coir door mats, seagrass is easy to deal with when it gets muddy. Using any standard broom you just brush the mud off once it has dried. Managing muddy dogs paws or messy wellies wouldn’t be such a breeze with basically any other carpet out there.

Summary.

In conclusion, Seagrass carpets are a fantastic addition to any room in the home. The waxy finish and stylish texture really brings any space to life. You will find these carpets being used in all rooms in the home.

So if you want seagrass to breath life back into your living room, improve the air quality when you sleep. Or maybe just to help deal with the aftermath of the country side ramble, seagrass flooring could be right for you.
